The puzzle is taken from www.gipf.com. The original puzzle is here.

It’s White’s turn. Apparently he’s in trouble: he has only 2 pieces left to play and quite a few lines on the board are blocked (i.e. all spots occupied), which makes play more difficult. He must recycle pieces. Will he be able to create a row of 4? Or is there even something better to do? What would be his best move?

Correct answer:

  • i3-d7

Through that move white establishes an attack on both black GIPF-pieces: the threat of the white pieces on e3, e4 and e5 cannot be broken, neither can Black move Ge2 or Ge7 to a safe position. So, no matter what Black does, White will always be able to play h6-d5 and capture the 2 black GIPF-pieces.
