Cognitive overload

According to research, every adult makes about 35,000 decisions a day. If we take 16 waking hours, that is an impressive 36 decisions per minute!

No wonder that, to avoid overload, the brain hands more than 99% of decisions to habits and emotions. That lets us decide fast and cheaply — an evolutionary survival trick: see a predator, run; smell food, go toward it. As studies by Sheena Iyengar of Columbia University show, we consciously register only about 70–100 decisions a day — from trivial ones (breakfast, shampoo) to serious ones (a job offer, arguments in a negotiation).

And that is where the traps lie. Human emotions are predictable. Once someone is on autopilot, they are easy to steer. Everyone uses that: corporations with “emotional hooks” to sell products, and scammers who push a victim into zeitnot, shutting down rational thought. The stakes there are much higher.

Optimising the cognitive system

Making so many decisions every day leads to mental wear — psychologists call it decision fatigue. When the cognitive budget runs out, the brain saves energy, lowers the bar for critical thinking, and falls back on automatic, emotional reactions. That is when we become most open to manipulation and mistakes.

Strategic thinking is not just abstract future-planning. It is a way to optimise the whole cognitive system so it can digest a huge daily volume of information.

It upgrades the “hardware” in two main ways:

1. Chunking information

Most people see a stream of tasks as thousands of tiny isolated problems. Trying to solve each one separately overloads the brain fast.

Strategic thinking trains the mind to bind scattered details into larger system blocks (patterns). Instead of thirty small choices, a strategist sees one picture and makes one systemic decision that closes a chain of related questions. That radically lightens working memory.

2. Lowering cognitive cost through higher-order automation

When you train strategic calculation, processes that once took heavy effort (risk analysis, cost–benefit, predicting reactions) gradually move onto an “advanced autopilot.” The brain learns to run complex logic quickly with less energy. Overall capacity grows: you can make more high-quality, conscious decisions per unit time without burning out by evening.

Deterministic games — the ideal training ground

How do you train a cognitive system to process information at that level? You need a simulator. In real life the cost of error is high, and feedback is often delayed or muddy.

Deterministic games with perfect information fit that role. They share three hard rules:

  1. No chance: no dice, hidden decks, or random generators.
  2. Full transparency: both players always see the whole board, all resources, and all legal moves.
  3. Pure intellectual contest: the result depends 100% on the quality of your decisions.

There is no “noise” from luck. That lets you train cognitive functions in isolation. The game builds a safe but intellectually hard environment where every decision gets feedback soon after. Regularly calculating lines on the board widens your mental bandwidth and prepares it for the chaos of real life.

From the board to real decisions: five practical skills

Time spent on abstract strategy quietly transfers game algorithms into daily practice:

Modelling the opponent (Theory of Mind).

In a deterministic game you cannot win by thinking only about your own pieces. You constantly ask: “What does my opponent see? What are their hidden motives? Why that odd move?” That builds the ability to stand in another person’s shoes. In life — in business talks or everyday conversation — that skill is invaluable. You stop blindly pushing your line and start seeing others’ triggers, fears, and counterarguments, which lets you take a stronger position.

Building a decision tree (Look-Ahead)

Calculating moves in perfect-information abstracts builds a tree of scenarios: “If I play A, they answer B, then I choose C.” In life that becomes automatic risk forecasting in hard negotiations or project planning.

The sente principle (holding the initiative)

In Go there are key ideas: sente (forcing your will) and gote (forced defence and reaction). Similar ideas apply across many abstracts: constant reaction leads to loss. The brain learns not to wait for a crisis, but to set the terms of the environment.

Positional advantage and delayed reward

Beginners always attack for a quick gain (grab a pawn, “catch” someone in conversation). Masters build a structure that pays off in the end. Play develops the ability to trade short-term comfort or profit for a long-term goal.

Managing limited resources

In any abstract strategy your resources are hard-capped: pieces, space on the board, and thinking time. The game teaches not to burn main potential on secondary tasks. In life that becomes hard prioritisation, focus allocation, and not wasting energy on actions that do not serve the strategic goal.
