This blog is about tabletop Deterministic games with Information that is Shared, Perfect control of Underlying Tactics (strictly speaking: deterministic games with perfect information — we bent the wording a little for a nicer acronym). :)

What are deterministic games with perfect information? The name says it: Deterministic games — the outcome depends only on the players’ actions, not on chance (drawn cards, dice, random tokens). Yes, a cat might knock pieces off the table and force a draw, but that is outside the game. :) Games with perfect information — every player always knows the full state of the game, the opponent’s actions, and the resources available to both sides.

Put simply: games where, after a loss, you cannot say “I just got unlucky — wrong card” but you can say “That was a good lesson. I’ll remember that idea.”

Classic examples are chess, draughts, and Go. Everyone has heard of them. They are millennia old and have huge followings. Hundreds of books cover their tactics and strategy; puzzle collections dissect them to the bone.

Beyond those giants, though, there are hundreds of games that match them in depth and elegance but lack the same body of knowledge and popularity. Here at Disput we want to talk about those games. Some were published commercially; some never caught on — yet they may still be the “hidden gems” that shine when given the right light.

Many people think deterministic abstracts are dull, unspectacular, and only for intellectuals. We are here to break that myth and show that every duel can hold drama, beautiful moves, and the poetry of combinations — and that with a little effort on the rules and strategy, each game can feel more plot-rich than Game of Thrones, with rises and falls, ambushes, and sudden stabs in the back.
